WSDA Scent Classes
WSDA is the World Scent Dog Association - an association that aims to train up dogs ready to compete in the ultimate scent competition - The Man Hunt. The Man Hunt is a new sport from the WSDA and requires you and your dog to become a crime fighting team, competing at various levels to solve mysteries. At the highest level the Man Hunt competitions are themed and dogs are trained to participate in 3 areas of nosework - active searches, passive searches and mantrailing.
For the active search we teach your dog to locate and retrieve catnip scented articles. In passive search, the target odour is gun oil (and initially Kong pieces). We teach your dog to freeze with their nose as close as they can get to the odour source, allowing for incredible precision.
This 8 week course will introduce you to the incredible world of scent work. We will show you how to introduce the 2 target scents and teach you step by step how to build the indication for both active and passive searches. After teaching the components we will put it all together in increasingly complex searches.
During the course we will teach you how to train:
Scent imprinting for passive and active odours
A speedy reliable retrieve
A strong freeze behaviour for passive indication
Independence, confidence and persistence in searching
Accuracy of the indication
Precision in indication
Ignoring distraction items
We will also cover:
Contamination and best practice for training
Residual odour and its implications
The importance of blind searches
Generalisation of skills
You will receive a starter scent kit to get you started and ongoing telephone support throughout the course.
We are also proud to be working in partnership with Alan Schofield Photography meaning that every dog booked onto our Foundation WSDA course will receive a free photo shoot with Alan and an 8x6 print!
Scent work is such an epic activity to do with your dog! Whether you are looking for a way to give your young dog an outlet for their energy or a physically gentle activity for your older dog to enjoy, scent work is my number one choice for dogs of every breed and all ages. It's a particular game changer for nervous dogs who could benefit from increased confidence and also reactive dogs too.
Classes are held at St. John the Baptist Church Hall, South St, Barnstaple EX32 9DT
