Paws on Boards Classes
Bringing you the UK's very first Doggy Surf School! Our entry level course runs for a duration of 8 weeks and is suitable for dogs over the age of 12 months. Over the course you will learn how to safely introduce your dog to the surfboard, increase focus in distracting coastal environments, teach ideal board positioning, body awareness, build confidence on the water, increase strength and balance and progress to your dog being able to being able to ride calm waves into shore.
Dogs should be confident and social around other dogs and people. Handlers don't need to be able to surf but should be ready to get wet and have fun!
Surfboard and dog life jacket hire is included but handlers will need to bring their own wetsuits.
This 8 week course is designed to give your dog the foundation skills they need to take to the waves! We will cover:
Board introduction and positioning
Focus around exciting coastal distractions
Increased body awareness and balance
Confidence in and on the water
Building core strength and fitness
Establishing a choice based training protocol
Safety and welfare are essential for every participant so we will also teach you about:
Dog body language
We are proud to be working in partnership with Alan Schofield Photography meaning that every Surfing Seadog booked onto our Paws on Boards course will receive a free photo shoot with Alan and an 8x6 print!
Our dog surfing sessions are held at Instow beach and Saunton Sands in North Devon. Detailed location information will be given to participants based on the surf forecast nearer to the time of the classes.
Upon completing the foundation classes dogs should be able to confidently take to the surfboard and ride waves into shore. However this is not where the training stops! There is a lot more to learn from advanced maneuvers along the board, competency in an increasing variety of conditions, building the duration of independent riding, learning a variety of ways to mount the board to provide flexibility for different conditions, improving fluidity and efficiency in maneuvering into the optimal riding position and of course riding tandem with their owners surfing or paddle-boarding. There are lots of routes to explore through 1to1 surf training sessions.
WHAT PEOPLE SAY
“We loved it! My rescue dog has never been in this kind of environment and he loved it, picked everything up really quickly and is now fast asleep! Bring on next week!”
